Finally!

Yesterday Nikos put the colours on the last (almost 200th) page of Mirabilis. So all I have to today is make the final tweaks to sound effects and word balloons and book 1 is all done.

Seems incredible that it was more than three years ago that we started work on the first episode for the DFC dummy issue - and that Mirabilis has been a full-time job for me and Leo for almost two years now. If we actually went ahead with the whole story we'd had planned, it would have kept us busy until 2013!

Having finished, of course we want to shout it from the rooftops - oh, and I just realized we have the perfect picture for that:

Though I don't know exactly when or in what form the book will see the light of day, we're at least going to print up a bunch of copies for ourselves. So that's what the Hartas, Koutsis, McKenna and Morris families can expect in their stockings this year.

  5. Thanks, guys! I'm afraid any print publication is a long, long way off. But in the meantime Leo and I have another couple of projects that should see the light of day a lot sooner - possibly just a few months into the New Year. We'll keep you posted.

  7. A great achievement. I want one in my stocking too! 200 pages... what a gorgeous thick spined book that would make!

  8. Amazing. Well done. Couple of questions... How the hell did you afford to be able to do it? and, why dont you self publish? It always seems a crime to me that work executed with such commitment does not see the light of day in some form or another.

  9. Andrew - how did we afford it? Family tax credits, a small inheritance due to Leo's father sadly dying, and some pretty swingeing economies on the domestic front. The last few months have been a bit tricky though, especially as we've both had to turn down other work in order to keep going, but I'm glad we did it. Abandoning the book after 50 pages would have meant a lifetime of regret.

I'd *love* to self-publish. And we actually had an iPhone deal lined up 6 months ago which would have meant the story would be rolling out now. That would have been a life-saver for the project because, even if it didn't make much money, it would have justified our continuing with book two. But, like Will with Bodkin & the Bear, we don't have the rights in the opening episodes that appeared in the DFC, so we may have to wait 2 years to get things like that off the ground. One day, though - I hope!

  10. you seem to be assuming it won't be part of the dfc library series... am i missing something?

  11. It may indeed appear in the dfc library, Will, but probably not until 2011 at the earliest. I would have liked to get it onto iPhone, etc, right now as that would have allowed us to continue work on it before our team broke up to go to other projects. But taking the glass-half-full, we did at least manage to get book one finished and we learned a lot in doing it. So not too bad!
